The best sports to watch are the ones we are playing. Come try this Gentlemen's Game at the Aarhus Cricket Club.
Cricket history in Denmark dates back to around 1866, representing well over 150 years of tradition. The game was brought to the country by English railway engineers and workers who, during that time, were helping to build the Danish rail network.
While walking through our beautiful city, you’ll notice some reliefs that still decorate some of the oldest buildings in Aarhus. At Aarhus Cathedral, one can find a gold leaf-covered relief of two crossed cricket bats, a tennis racket, and some balls. Cricket has thus played a role at the school.
Looking into the history books, you will find that the Aarhus Cathedral School Cricket Association was one of the first clubs in Denmark, even founded long before the Danish Athletic Federation, which was established in 1896.
Cricket came to Aarhus with the Englishmen around 1868. In their spare time, they relaxed with their home country’s leading sports—cricket. They nurtured good relationships with the local citizens, who in turn took to the game. Soon they brought cricket into the schools, where students were trained twice weekly.
This interest in cricket was maintained at the school for many years, and they played many tournaments with other clubs. Cricket was, besides the physical part, a means of genuine character education. In this way, the ideals of English civilization merged well with the Latin school spirit.
The transition to a fully independent club with only cricket on the program is difficult to determine exactly. For many years, Aarhus Boldklub was a subsidiary of AGF. However, something new happened on 7 April 1916. Each year, we celebrate this day as the club’s birthday, and the date is considered the official founding date for the ACC—Aarhus Cricket Club.
Today, Aarhus Cricket Club stands as a beacon of cricket in Denmark, committed to fostering a love for the game among players of all ages and backgrounds. Our club is proud to offer a range of programs designed to engage both seasoned players and newcomers. For those just starting, we provide introductory sessions where the basics of cricket are taught in a friendly and supportive environment. Experienced players can enjoy regular practice sessions and competitive matches in the Danish Cricket Federation (DCF) leagues, where we currently compete in Division 2 and Division 4.
Our senior men's teams, comprising both the 1st and 2nd teams, practice together twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 17:00 to 19:00. These sessions are held at our home ground, the Aarhus Cricket Club, where players hone their skills, build team spirit, and prepare for upcoming matches. For our younger members, boys and girls aged 9 to 14, we hold practice sessions every Friday from 17:00 to 18:15. These sessions are specifically designed to be fun and engaging, fostering a love for the game in a safe and encouraging environment.
Aarhus Cricket Club is not just about playing cricket; it’s about building a community. We regularly host social events and gatherings, providing our members with the opportunity to connect off the field. These events help to strengthen the bonds within our club, making it a welcoming place for everyone.
We are committed to promoting cricket not only within our club but also in the broader Aarhus community. By introducing cricket to local schools and organizing open days where anyone can come and try out the sport, we aim to spread our passion for cricket and ensure its growth in Denmark. Whether you’re looking to play competitively or simply want to enjoy the social side of the sport, Aarhus Cricket Club has something to offer.
Our club’s history is rich with tradition, but our eyes are firmly set on the future. We welcome everyone to come and be a part of our journey, whether as a player, supporter, or volunteer. Cricket is more than just a sport; it’s a way of life, and at Aarhus Cricket Club, we’re proud to carry on this legacy. Join us and experience the excitement, camaraderie, and spirit of cricket in Aarhus.
